A State-by-State Guide to Voter Registration

States with registration options during Early Voting and Election Day:

In California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada. New Mexico, North Carolina, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming voters can register and vote on the same day during the early voting period.

In California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming you can register to vote at the polls on election day.


Breakdown of voter registration options by type:

All states except for New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Wisconsin allow voters to mail in or hand deliver a paper form in order to register to vote. You can register to vote online in every state except North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.


States with ID requirements for online voter registration:

Across states and types of registration, whether or not an ID is required to register to vote varies greatly. For online registration, ID is required in 28 out of 43 states that offer online registration. For registration by form, all states that allow registration by form, do not require ID except for Wyoming. For same day early voting, registration does not require ID except in Nevada and New Mexico. For election day registration, registration does not require ID except for Nevada and Wyoming.
