By the Numbers, pt. 2

In part 1 of our series, we explored how our positions database has grown in 2022 with nearly 110k positions included in this year’s voter guide. In this article, we take a look instead at the behavior of the voters who use BallotReady.org including 3 key user trends to know:

Note: These figures are accurate as of of 7/15/22. We have had another ~300k site visitors since.

Most users engage in the final two weeks leading up to Election Day

While BallotReady provides an every year, all year resource, our users still rely on us the most when making their decisions close to Election Day.

In 2020, we had almost 5.8 million visitors to our BallotReady.org website. 6.6% of those visits came on the day of the presidential election. 21% of visitors came in the week leading up to the election, and almost 60% of our visitors came in the month leading up to the presidential election. Other election events like Super Tuesday are also visible peaks on the above graph further reinforcing the trend.

BallotReady has had more users in 2022 than 2020 thus far

2020 was BallotReady’s biggest year so far. While providing crucial information to voters, more Americans were able to get informed, apply to vote by mail, and contact their elected officials through BallotReady than ever before - and voter turnout was the highest in modern history.

2022 is shaping up to be more impactful.

Compared to this point in 2020, we have seen a 45% increase, or almost 400,000 more people research their ballot and make a plan to vote. Over 80,000 people used BallotReady on May 17th, a day of multiple, important primaries. This day-high tops our 2020 high (as of July 20th, 2020) of just under 70,000 users.

Based on this data, we are projecting to have more 2022 general election users than we had in 2020.

BallotReady users are balanced across age and gender

BallotReady.org clearly attracts voters across different demographics based on our analytics. Women are slightly more likely to use us to research their ballot than men by a small margin (52.23%-47.77%). The 35-44 age demographic is our largest user base, but voters from the age of 18, up to the 65+ category, use our site to make informed decisions.

BallotReady has an impact in all 50 states

In 2020, BallotReady.org saw high usage in all 50 states with particularly high use per capita in swing states, and in states with impactful down ballot races.

Outside of Illinois (where BallotReady was founded and first began coverage), we saw some of our highest use in states with tight races like Michigan, Nevada and Arizona.

But our top 2020 state was Georgia- behind only Illinois in per capita BallotReady use in 2020, BallotReady.org saw some our highest activity (6x the rate of reminder sign ups) and voter impact (thousands of mail in ballot applications filed).

This year, Texas has overtaken Georgia with 152,152 users to date.
